Life Is A Jest: John Gay

John GayThe previous quotation by Harold Pinter, that everything in life is funny if looked at in the proper way, seems very modern. However, he was beaten to it by John Gay (1685-1732), author of The Beggars’ Opera:

Life is a jest, and all things show it,
I thought so once, and now I know it.

This couplet is engraved on his tombstone in Westminster Abbey.
