‘Benjamin Jowett’ on Benjamin Jowett

Benjamin_Jowett

Here I am, my name is Jowett.
What there is to know, I know it.
I’m the Master of this college,
What I know not, is not knowledge.

Benjamin Jowett (15 April 1817 – 1 October 1893) was renowned as an influential tutor and administrative reformer in the University of Oxford, a theologian and translator of Plato. He was Master of Balliol College, Oxford. (‘Jowett’ rhymes with ‘know it’).

The illustration was published in Vanity Fair, 26 February 1876 by ‘Spy’, Sir Leslie Matthew Ward (1851 – 1922)
