Menu for 99th Day of Siege of Paris

By their menus ye shall know them

This is of course a take on the Bible verse ‘by their fruits ye shall know them’ (Matthew 7.20)

The illustration is the menu from a restaurant in Paris for Christmas 1870, the 99th day of the siege. The meal includes Elephant Consommé, Roast Camel à l’anglaise (!), Roast Bear Chops, Cat flanked by Rats and so on. But it was all washed down by Chateau Palmer, Mouton Rothschild and Romanée Conti. Perhaps this was the day for a liquid lunch…
