Sipping Cider Through A Straw: Nina and Frederick

The prettiest girl I ever saw
Was sippin’ cider through a straw.
The prettiest girl I ever saw
Was sippin’ cider through a straw.

I said ‘Fair miss, I you implore
Why sip ye cider through a straw?’
I said ‘Fair miss, I you implore
Why sip ye cider through a straw?’

I said to him, ‘There is no law
‘gainst sipping cider through a straw.’
I said to him, ‘There is no law
‘gainst sipping cider through a straw.’

So cheek to cheek and jaw by jaw
We both sipped cider through a straw.
So cheek to cheek and jaw by jaw
We both sipped cider through a straw.

And now I’ve got a mother-in-law
From sippin’ cider through a straw.
And now I’ve got a mother-in-law
From sippin’ cider through a straw.

So cheek to cheek and jaw by jaw
We both sip cider through a straw.
So cheek to cheek and jaw by jaw
We both sip cider through a straw.

Hello Laura. I just saw your page by chance and I am wondering why the lyrics of this song are slightly different from what Nina and Frederick actually sang on the LP of which you have the sleeve as a photo. It has 6 quatrains of which the first, fourth and sixth differ:
1 The sweetest girl I ever saw Sat sippin’ cider through a straw.
    NOT
The prettiest girl I ever saw Was sippin’ cider through a straw.

4 So cheek by cheek and jaw by jaw We both sip cider through a straw.
    NOT
So cheek to cheek and jaw by jaw We both sipped cider through a straw.

6 So cheek by cheek and jaw by jaw We both sip cider through a straw.
    NOT
So cheek to cheek and jaw by jaw …

This is one of those questions to which I have long forgotten the answer. I think I must have cut and pasted from somewhere, thereby unwittingly compounding another transliterator’s mistake. Well spotted!
